An industrial area with a refreshing atmosphere may sound like a contradiction, but that’s exactly what you’ll find in the Houthavens. Many creative entrepreneurs rent old warehouses here together, including Indiana Roma Voss.
Who is Indiana?
After spending her early years in New York, Indiana grew up in the Netherlands. Starting at age thirteen, she worked as an assistant to her mother, who was a stylist. So it was no surprise that she chose to attend art school. Still, it was surprising that she ended up pursuing a career in styling, since during her studies she had firmly stated that she never wanted to become a stylist. “But during my teenage years, my mother fell ill. Looking back, I think the decision to pursue styling after all was a way for me to feel closer to her.”
The choice proved to be a success: early in her career, she received the prestigious Elle Style Award. This immediately launched her career with a rocket start. Now she collaborates with established names like Vogue Italia, Nike, and Uber. But that didn’t just fall into her lap. “Anyone trying to make it in the arts or in fashion just has to work incredibly hard.” That shapes you. It shaped her, too. “It’s considered cool to say, “I’m chill, I go with the flow.” But that’s not who I am. I’m an ambitious woman, and to be honest, that doesn’t make me everyone’s cup of tea.”
How she works
Recently, after ten years as a stylist, she made the transition to film director and art director. The themes of her projects stem from what catches her eye in everyday life - things she wants to capture within a larger narrative. For example, she is currently working on a project centered on the theme of mental health.
The results vary, but she has a love for the video format known as “tableau vivant,” literally translated as “a living painting”: an art form in which models silently fill the scenes.
This is also how her recently award-winning work The Birth of a Siren came about. A modern reinterpretation of Greek mythology. In a visual style reminiscent of Helmut Newton, it depicts women in glittery dresses falling into a swimming pool. The video project was selected for the Photo Vogue Festival in Milan.

Creative in Amsterdam
As a stylist, she worked from the garden shed at her home in the Baarsjes during the Covid pandemic, where she lived with her younger sister. “Studios in Amsterdam are expensive, and during the pandemic, I transformed my garden shed into - well, this will be my creative workspace.” Now she works in a warehouse on Danzigerbocht, an industrial area where many creative entrepreneurs rent space. That’s her home base, but she’s since managed to break into the international market as well.
“As far as inspiration goes, I think Amsterdam has become monotonous, the colorful characters I grew up with are now basically gone. I find that very sad. But the quality of life is high. Where else on earth, in what other city, can you just jump into a canal if you feel like it? There are things I really appreciate about the lifestyle Amsterdam has to offer. And yes, apparently that’s what you pay for.”
How has Amsterdam helped you career-wise? I ask her.
“All those years of going out really helped me a lot. You’re constantly moving through different social circles. I’ve met a lot of people I run into again now, and we say to each other, ‘Oh yeah, I remember you from back then, right?’ That’s always my advice to young people: just go out. And talk to everyone.”
Five Years From Now
“I want to experiment with my style as much as possible and continue to develop my skills in the technical aspects of film-making. Right now, I’m open to projects, both big and small, that can help me deepen my knowledge of filmmaking and art direction.”
Will you still be in Amsterdam then?
“I don’t know. I’m certain I won’t live anywhere else in the Netherlands, but I’m not sure if I’ll stay in the Netherlands.”
Would it be New York, then?
“It would be New York.”

Een industrieterrein met een frisse sfeer klinkt tegenstrijdig, maar in de Houthavens vind je het. Veel creatieve ondernemers huren hier samen oude loodsen, onder wie Indiana Roma Voss.
Wie is Indiana?
Na haar eerste levensjaren in New York groeide Indiana op in Nederland. Vanaf haar dertiende stond ze al als assistent naast haar moeder, die als stylist werkte. De kunstacademie was dan ook geen verrassende keuze. Toch verraste het wel dat ze ook het stylingvak in ging, want tijdens haar studie zei ze stellig dat ze nooit stylist wilde worden. "Maar in de pubertijd werd mijn moeder ziek. Achteraf gezien denk ik dat de keuze om toch styling in te gaan een manier was om me dichter bij haar te voelen."
De keuze bleek een succes: vroeg in haar carrière ontving ze de prestigieuze Elle Style Award. Hierdoor ging haar carrière meteen explosief van start. Nu werkt ze samen met gevestigde namen als Vogue Italia, Nike en Uber. Maar dat is haar niet komen aanwaaien. "Iedereen die het probeert te maken in de kunst of in de mode moet gewoon keihard werken." Dat vormt je. Zo ook haar. "Het is natuurlijk niet cool om streng te zijn. Het wordt verheerlijkt om te zeggen: ik ben chill, ik neem elke situation zoals die komt. Maar zo ben ik niet. Ik ben een ambitieuze vrouw, en daarmee ben ik eerlijk gezegd niet everybody's cup of tea."
Hoe zij te werk gaat
Kort geleden, na tien jaar styling, zette ze de stap naar regisseur en art director. De onderwerpen van haar projecten ontwikkelen zich vanuit wat haar in het dagelijks leven opvalt, iets wat ze in een groter verhaal wil vangen. Ze is nu bijvoorbeeld bezig met een project rondom het thema mentale gezondheid.
De uitwerkingen variëren, maar ze heeft een liefde voor de video-vorm ‘tableau vivant’, letterlijk vertaald ‘een levend schilderij’: een kunstvorm waarbij modellen zwijgend de scènes vullen.
Zo ontstond ook haar onlangs bekroonde werk The Birth of a Siren, een moderne herinterpretatie van de Griekse mythologie. Het toont, in Helmut Newton-achtige beeldtaal, vrouwen in glitterjurken die het zwembad in vallen. Het videoproject werd geselecteerd voor het Photo Vogue Festival in Milaan.
Creatief in Amsterdam
Als stylist werkte ze tijdens de Covid periode vanuit het tuinhuis van haar woning in de Baarsjes, waar ze met haar zusje woonde. "Studio's in Amsterdam zijn duur en in de Covid periode heb ik mijn tuinhuis omgetoverd van oké, nou, dat wordt dit mijn creatieve werkplek." Nu werkt ze in een loods aan de Danzigerbocht, een industrieterrein waar veel creatieve ondernemers een plek huren. Dat is haar thuisbasis, maar inmiddels is het haar gelukt om ook aan het werk te kunnen op de internationale markt.
“Wat betreft inspiratie vind ik Amsterdam monotoon geworden, de paradijsvogels waar ik mee opgroeide zijn nu basically gone. Dat vind ik wel erg verdrietig. Maar de kwaliteit van het leven is wel hoog. Waar kan je nou in godsnaam, in welke stad, gewoon in de gracht springen als je daar zin in hebt? Er zijn dingen die ik heel erg waardeer aan de levensstijl die Amsterdam te bieden heeft. En ja, daar betaal je dan dus ook voor schijnbaar."
Wat brengt Amsterdam je verder op werkgebied? Vraag ik haar.
"Ik heb echt heel veel gehad aan al mijn jaren uitgaan. Dan bevind je je steeds in verschillende sociale kringen. Ik heb veel mensen ontmoet die ik dan nu weer tegenkom, en dat we tegen elkaar zeggen van; oh ja, ik ken jou nog van toen en toen, toch? Dat is ook altijd mijn advies voor jonge mensen: ga gewoon uit. En met iedereen praten."
Over Vijf Jaar?
"Ik wil zo veel mogelijk experimenteren met mijn stijl, en me verder ontwikkelen in de technische aspecten van film. Op dit moment sta ik open voor grote en kleine projecten die me verdieping kunnen bieden op gebied van film en art direction.”
Zit je dan nog in Amsterdam?
"Weet ik niet. Ik weet wel zeker dat ik nergens anders in Nederland ga wonen, maar ik weet niet zeker of ik in Nederland blijf."
Zou het dan New York zijn?
"Het zou New York zijn."
