Who is Jorge?
Jorge Velez worked in television and music production in New Jersey, but is now an Amsterdam-based creative. He moved here in 2019, and although the plan was to continue working in television and audiovisual production, the language barrier proved to be a major obstacle, especially in the television industry. After six months of freelancing, the pandemic struck. Instead of getting discouraged, he didn’t let it get to him: he used the time to learn Dutch and take his integration exam. He also decided, due to the reduced availability of work, to change course. He started making art for a living.
How he works
His many years of experience in the music industry - including as an artist himself - combined with his illustration work, have led to some great projects. For example, James Holden, an electronic DJ and producer, asked him to design an album cover.
“I have a video of him (Holden) playing my song at midnight in 2013 at Trouw. A song I once made in my bedroom, and then I saw him playing it and people dancing to it” Jorge says. “I think it’s funny how everything comes full circle.”
“So how do you go about creating a cover like that?” I ask him.
Jorge listened to the album once and described to Holden, track by track, everything he saw. For one song he explained a landscape full of cranes, like Amsterdam-Noord had next to the Eye at the time. Then Holden started laughing. “You’re reading my mind” he said. The trust was there, and he gave Jorge free rein. “Just do whatever you want to do.”
“I always work spontaneously,” he says. “When an idea pops into my head, I just have to make it. It might come to me during my lunch break at work, and when it does, I immediately grab a pen and paper. Then it’s down on paper, and that little sketch can eventually grow into something bigger.”
And how would you define your style?
“I don’t know. But a friend once told me that my style was playful, even when dealing with a serious subject.” He doesn’t see it that way himself. “I really enjoy the process. Getting my hands dirty and making discoveries. But I don’t just do things, I take it very seriously.”

Creative in Amsterdam
Over the past ten years, he has seen attitudes toward art shift. In the past, people were willing to invest in music and creative work, which encouraged its creation and fostered the hope of getting something in return later on. “But I think that trust has disappeared, and with it, the willingness to pay for creativity” he says. “Even though people still want it. It’s as if creative work, whether it’s music or visual art, is supposed to just fall from the sky.”
That declining willingness affected him personally as well: a year ago, he went back to working in the hospitality industry, at The Social Hub, and he’s sharing an apartment again so he can afford the rent.
Making a living as a freelancer through illustration and design is difficult in Amsterdam. The album cover didn’t lead to any follow-up work. Still, he continues to look at the city with admiration. “I walk in places where Rembrandt once walked, and even though the city has changed, the river still curves in the same direction, and the light still falls on it just as it did back then.” An illustration he created for the I Amsterdam magazine (featuring the Blauwbrug with two birds and Rembrandt sketching on it) is, as he puts it, his way of saying thank you to the city.
Five Years From Now
“I hope to stay in the Netherlands, maybe in Amsterdam,” he says. “But I'd also like to be in the south, maybe I'll consider something in Maastricht. I always get along really well with people from the south.”

Wie is Jorge?
Jorge Velez werkte in televisie- en muziekproductie in New Jersey, maar is nu een Amsterdam-based creatief. Hij verhuisde hierheen in 2019, en hoewel het plan was om door te gaan met televisie- en audiovisueel werk, bleek de taalbarrière vooral in de televisiewereld in de weg te zitten. Na zes maanden freelancen sloeg de pandemie toe. In plaats van verslagen te zijn, liet hij zich niet kennen: hij gebruikte de tijd om Nederlands te leren en zijn inburgeringsexamen te doen. Ook besloot hij, door het verminderde aanbod van werk, het over een andere boeg te gooien. Hij ging kunst maken voor geld.
Hoe hij te werk gaat
Zijn jarenlange ervaring in de muziekindustrie, ook zelf als artiest, gecombineerd met zijn illustratiewerk, leverde hem mooie projecten op. Zo vroeg James Holden, elektronische dj en producer, hem om een albumcover te maken.
"Ik heb een video van hem (Holden) terwijl hij mijn nummer speelt in 2013 om middernacht in de Trouw. Een nummer dat ik ooit op mijn slaapkamer maakte, en vervolgens zag ik hem het draaien en mensen erop dansen." vertelt Jorge. "Ik vind het grappig hoe alles dan weer bij elkaar komt."
Hoe begin je dan aan zo'n cover? Vraag ik hem.
Jorge luisterde één keer naar het album en beschreef Holden nummer voor nummer alles wat hij zag, zoals het landschap van kranen dat Amsterdam-Noord destijds naast het Eye had. Toen begon Holden te lachen. "Je leest mijn gedachten" zei hij. Het vertrouwen was er, en hij gaf Jorge vrij spel. "Doe gewoon wat je wilt doen."
Ik werk altijd spontaan, zegt hij. "Als er een idee opkomt, moet ik het gewoon maken. Het kan tijdens mijn lunchpauze op werk opkomen, en als dat zo is, dan pak ik meteen pen en papier. Dan staat het ergens, en die kleine schets kan uiteindelijk uitgroeien tot iets groters."
En hoe kan je jouw stijl definiëren?
"Dat weet ik niet. Maar een vriend vertelde ooit dat mijn stijl speels was. Zelfs bij een serieus onderwerp." Zelf ziet hij het niet zo. "Ik beleef veel plezier aan het proces, aan het vies maken van mijn handen en de ontdekking. Maar ik doe niet zomaar wat, ik neem het heel serieus."
Creatief in Amsterdam
De afgelopen tien jaar heeft hij de mentaliteit ten opzichte van kunst zien verschuiven. Vroeger waren mensen bereid te investeren in muziek en creatief werk, wat het maken ervan stimuleerde en de hoop er later weer wat voor terug te krijgen. "Maar ik denk dat dat vertrouwen achteruit is gegaan, en daarmee ook de bereidheid om voor creativiteit te betalen." zegt hij. "Terwijl mensen het alsnog willen hebben. Alsof creatief werk, of het nou muziek is of beeldende kunst, gewoon uit de lucht moet komen vallen."
Die teruglopende bereidheid raakte hem ook: een jaar geleden ging hij weer aan de slag in de horeca, bij The Social Hub, en deelt hij weer een woning, om zo de huur te kunnen betalen.
Als freelancer de kost verdienen met illustratie en ontwerp is in Amsterdam lastig. De albumhoes leverde hem geen vervolgwerk op. Toch blijft hij ook vol bewondering naar de stad kijken. "Ik loop op plekken waar ook Rembrandt heeft gelopen, en ook al is de stad veranderd, de rivier buigt nog steeds dezelfde kant op, en het licht valt er nog steeds hetzelfde op als toen."
Een illustratie die hij maakte voor het I Amsterdam tijdschrift, van de Blauwbrug met twee vogels en een tekenende Rembrandt erop, is, zoals hij zelf zegt, zijn manier om dank je wel aan de stad te zeggen.
Over Vijf Jaar?
"Ik hoop in Nederland te blijven, misschien Amsterdam." zegt hij. "Maar ik zou ook graag in het zuiden zijn, misschien iets in Maastricht overwegen. Met mensen uit het zuiden kan ik het altijd heel goed vinden."
